Mafia 3 (Video Game Review)

Grand accomplishments always spawn mimics. Whether it’s World of Warcraft or Grand Theft Auto, the titans which define a genre will always be used as a measuring stick by others and lead to developers trying to beat them at their own game. While you can find the odd success, most inevitably fail, and those which are truly successful usually emerge triumphant by going their own way. The odd thing about the Mafia series is that it has ultimately gone in reverse. After the second game established a vastly different take on the old open world crime tropes, Mafia 3 has ditched nearly everything in favour of aping Grand Theft Auto. Suffice to say, it’s a big step backwards.

  1. Welcome to the opinions of Callum Shephard - scrambler of words, insult to print, failure of a writer and someone who cannot score a game to save his life, let alone play it!

  2. So I've looked up a playthrough of this before commenting, and I'm very glad I did. It seems you hit the nail on the head in that the story's really good, but other than that it's a very boring open world game that just makes you wish it would try something different (and not just because it comes from a series that actually did do something different).

    1. That's the real problem here more than anything else, and the story and presentation did make me want to give it a higher score. The problem was, everything was just so banal besides that, that I actually found myself making excuses not to play it. When something has become that drawn out, that overly repetitive and problematic in its core gameplay, something has gone very wrong.

Also, thank you for the positive feedback. It's a nice change from the death threats.
