A Single Typo Ruined Aliens: Colonial Marines' AI
Every time it’s seemingly done and buried, Aliens: Colonial Marines comes back to haunt Gearbox in whole new ways. The game has been subject to heavy criticism and a lightning rod for controversy in the five years since its release. Both Randy Pitchford’s willingness to blame his audience for having high expectations, and a final product which barely resembled the vertical slice demo, have been particular sore spots among fans. However, a whole new problem has been uncovered by modder jamesdickinson963, who has been attempting to fix Colonial Marines with his TemplarGFX’s ACM Overhaul. Apparently the game’s much derided AI was the result of typos within its basic scripting prompts.

Next up, Hunt Down the Freeman's issues were also ruined by a single typo and the game will become amazing.
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, Colonial Marines has so many issues that the alien AI didn't even stick in my memory when I thought about what that game did badly. Even if the aliens react appropriately, that's not going to change the terrible story, stupid retcons, horrible boss fights and the fact that a lot of it has you fighting other people in levels that aren't going to be made more fun if this typo is fixed.
Yeah, I was lucky enough to skip this during its initial release - I was working at Paranerds.com at the time and we didn't get a review copy - but I did look through a guy's attempt at a let's play. The story was dumb to start with, but before the patches it was like the incompetence had layers to it. I think the worst one was where the stoic marines bugged out and started unloading clip after clip into a nearby wall.
DeleteThis doesn't fix much, but it actually makes the aliens somewhat challenging from what I have seen. So, at least players can no longer Gandhi-rush levels, completing them without firing a shot.
