Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Shows Signs of Life – New Sequel Inbound?
Strange things indeed have been happening surrounding one of THQ’s final glorious gaming gems. Released back in 2011, Space Marine was one of the most lauded and highly promoted Warhammer 40,000 titles of the past decade, surpassed only by the Dawn of War franchise. Despite critical success, the game sadly failed to hit the targets its publisher needed and as a result, despite future plans, it never saw a sequel. Now however, after three years of inactivity, the game seems to be receiving a great deal of attention.
This might not be a sequel, but maybe just an expansion or at worst a revamp to cash in on the Eisenhorn game that'll be coming out soon. That said I swear that some of the official artwork is new, and at least one screenshot on their website I don't remember from the game.
ReplyDeleteWell, personally that was one of my first thoughts as well, but it's hard to think that Sega would really attempt an expansion three years on. The games which really attempted such things usually made some effort to retain as many fans as they could first, whereas Space Marine has been largely silent on the developer front. I'm not saying either of your suggestions are out of the question - Sega has been known to do far nuttier things over the years - but personally i'm somewhat hopeful we might see something good come out of this.
DeleteI really hope we get a sequel. Titus had probably one of the best retorts to BOTH the 'all Ultramarines consider the Codex Astartes a holy text' and the 'the Codex Astartes makes the Ultramarines weak' brigades with his speech to Leandros. Plus I think Space Marine is possibly the only shooter set in the 40kverse to really capture it (I consider Fire Warrior a guilty pleasure due to its focus on the Tau, but the novelisation is far superior).
ReplyDeleteMind you, we've had 'Dawn of War III imminent' rumours for a while due to the new forums, and nothing's materialized yet. I am hoping we're getting new things for both franchises though. Sega inherited an excellent license and developer with Relic, and I can't believe they wouldn't want to cash in on games which are proven successes. Just hoping we don't end up with a Tiberian Twilight situation which kills the franchises.
Well, in all fairness like so much of the C&C series, Tiberium Twilight was ruined more by publisher interference than anything else. Apparently it was just supposed to be a stop-gap measure before the final game, with no actual campaign and purely multiplayer, and it was only EA which demanded they add in that stuff. We can only hope that Sega isn't going to be quite so bull-headed when it comes to their new franchises.
DeleteAlso, i'll definitely agree that the novel for Fire Warrior was brilliant. Personally, until some of the recent short stories, I thought it to be the only viewpoint story from the tau to actually get them right.
just do the soul drinkers as a game and make it more tactical and realistic like a wh40k meets battlefield
