this is simply a preview.
A problem with some authors and military fiction is it can be hard to strike a good balance between humanity and the horror of conflict. Go too far in one direction and you end up driving the reader away with relentless nihilism, too far in the other and you end up losing the pressing danger of battle. For what it is, Huff manages to strike an excellent balance with strong characters and a distinctive setting.
Set centuries into the future, the alien coalitions of theConfederation and the Others battle relentlessly across the stars. As anopportunity arises to recruit another species as allies, Staff Sergeant TorinKerr and her platoon are assigned as an honour guard to ensure things gosmoothly. Unfortunately, things quickly prove to be anything but smoothly.
